The benefits of working from home are many–convenience, comfort and even the potential to be your own boss are the biggest ones. But a 2014 survey conducted by ConnectSolutions. suggests that there may be another big benefit to working from home–improved productivity. Their survey found that about 70 percent of the nearly 40 percent of people who worked at home at least one time per month were more productive as a result of working in their home environment. More productivity means you earn more, and the more money you have in your pocket, the higher your chance of getting rich.
Analyzing the Survey
The findings of the ConnectSolutions Survey are compelling but it’s important to take them with a grain of salt. The company that sponsored the survey is a cloud worker solutions provider, meaning that they have a vested interest in selling the idea of hiring at-home workers.
In addition, the survey, which by the way was launched through paid surveys, also asks respondents to rate their own productivity. It doesn’t ask their employers if they feel that their remote workers are now more productive, and the survey does not require the respondents to use any type of criteria to measure their productivity. Instead, it just asks if they feel they are, making the answer rather subjective. There is always a chance that respondents want to cast their work at home in a favourable light, so that they can continue to work remotely and enjoy the other benefits that it provides.
Of course, it could be equally possible that people really are more productive when they work at home. This could be because they’re more at ease, they don’t have distractions from coworkers or they work harder to ensure that they continue to have the privilege of remote work.
Who Works From Home?
People from a wide variety of backgrounds and walks of life work from home. If you’re considering doing online work in any field, you may want to think about how you match up with the profiles of other remote workers. Here are some of the groups of people who commonly work at home:
The U.S. Census found that more than half of the people who work at home at least one day out of the week were between the ages of 35 and 54. About 60 percent of those who work from home full time are above the age of 45 years, and roughly 68 percent of them are married. Generally, younger unmarried employees are less likely to feel satisfied working at home because they miss out on the social aspects of being in the workplace. For married people with families, working from home offers more flexibility for meeting family obligations and caring for children, making it more appealing.
Low Hourly Wage Workers
Studies have found that people who work from home typically live in households where overall incomes are high but have low annual incomes themselves. About 50 percent of individuals who work from home full time make less than $25,000 annually but report a household income of over $75,000 per year.
The likely explanation for this is that having a large source of income from one or more other family members gives at-home workers the freedom to take more flexible work-from-home jobs. It could also be that these people work from home as a side business to earn some extra money and are predominantly stay-at-home moms and dads.
Managers, Sales People and Customer Service Providers
There are some jobs that just lend themselves more easily to working at home. One example is customer service call centre jobs, which can be done in a quiet environment with nothing more than a computer, a headset and the right software. A lot of virtual assistants also earn their money from home, since having an office for such a job is not necessary.
Sales work can also frequently be done with a home office as a home base for operations, particularly when travel is often needed as a part of a job. Managers who oversee teams spread over a wide geographic area may also be able to work at home and visit their subordinates as needed, communicating in between via phone, chat services and web conferencing.
Another group of people who are not bound by the traditional rules of working in the office are those who have found online jobs or searched for freelance positions: These individuals are still able to deliver high quality work and are proof that working from home can be a smart model.
